Presiding Bishop Jefferts Schori accepts renunciations of Bane and MacBurney

[June 12, 2009]
Episcopal Church Presiding Bishop Katharine Jefferts Schori has accepted the renunciations of David C. Bane and Edward MacBurney, following their March 2009 correspondence to her in which they announced their intentions to move to another province.

Bane is the resigned bishop of the diocese of Southern Virginia and MacBurney is the resigned bishop of the diocese of Quincy .

In accepting their renunciations, the Presiding Bishop did not depose the two, nor does this action affect their standings in other provinces. They are being removed from ordained ministry in The Episcopal Church “for causes which do not affect (their) moral character.”

With the full support of her Council of Advice, and under the authority of Title III Canon 12 section 7 of The Episcopal Church, the Presiding Bishop notified Bane and MacBurney on June 12.

The two were informed, along with House of Bishops, the Secretary of General Convention, the secretaries of the conventions and the standing committees of the Dioceses of Southern Virginia and Quincy, the Church Deployment Board and the recorder of originations of Church Pension Group.

The Episcopal Church, with 110 dioceses in 16 nations, is a member province of the worldwide Anglican Communion.
