Diocese Of Quincy Calls For Election Of A Bishop

The historic Anglo-catholic Diocese of Quincy headquartered in Peoria , IL , has announced plans to elect their next bishop. The Diocese has been led by the diocesan Standing Committee since the retirement of Bishop Keith Ackerman last fall.

“We’ve begun the process of assessing the needs and vision of our diocese and forming a Search Committee,” said Fr. John Spencer, President of the Standing Committee. “We’ll begin receiving nominations on July 1st, and will move forward with interviews through the late summer. We plan to elect at our annual Synod in October.”

The diocese officially separated from the Episcopal Church at their Synod last November and temporarily affiliated with the traditional Anglican Province of the Southern Cone, one of 38 provinces of the world-wide Anglican Communion. At a meeting later this month in Bedford, Texas, Quincy will become a founding diocese of the Anglican Church in North America, a group of about 800 traditional Anglican churches in the US and Canada who have left the Episcopal Church and the Church of Canada over a period of 40 years.

The new bishop, Spencer said, will serve as a “bishop in cure” with dual responsibility, serving a local congregation as well as having spiritual and administrative oversight of the diocese as a whole.

“After we separated from the Episcopal Church,” Spencer said, “four churches pulled out of our diocese in order to stay under the Episcopal Church. We presently have 19 churches, so we don’t think the diocese needs a full-time bishop at present.”

“We’re excited about calling our next bishop,” Fr. Spencer concluded. “Several churches outside our immediate area have expressed interest in joining us, and we hope to see growth over the next couple of years. And we’re excited about being part of the new Anglican Church in North America . We’ve taken an unambiguous stand upholding biblical, orthodox Christianity here in our diocese. We’ll continue to do what we’ve always done, faithfully worshipping Jesus Christ as the only Savior of mankind, and serving our communities as we have since 1877.”
